Overview: This program is designed to address knowledge gaps within early-career health economics and health policy researchers pertaining to the availability and use of large-scale medical claims datasets used by health care providers, insurers, and researchers in the United States. Participants will learn about: 1) the medical reimbursement process, 2) the coding of diagnostic and medical procedures, and 3) consumer cost-sharing, all of which generate and contextualize the data found in administrative medical datasets. We will also discuss differences in the publication process between economics, health policy, and medical journals and common mistakes junior scholars make in conducting and publishing healthcare studies. Participants will acquire hands-on experience using data housed at HEAL and receive dedicated mentorship opportunities designed to culminate in new research ideas and projects upon completion of the program.
Dates: July 19-21, 2021
Location: The program will take place at the Health Economics and Analytics Lab (HEAL) in Georgia Tech’s CODA building – the largest dedicated data analytics building on an academic campus in the U.S. and home to North America’s largest spiral staircase.
